How to Finance Your Automobile Purchase

Buying a car, especially a new car, is a major investment. In the United States it can cost you on average close to $30,000. For most people this represents a major investment and it makes good sense to carefully investigate all the financing options.

Since dealers often offer substantial discounts for paying in cash, this is usually the cheapest way to buy your automobile. However, if you are part of the majority for whom this option is not feasible, it becomes a question of finding out the best credit options available.

Although dealers will be happy to offer to find you a loan to finance a purchase from them, but since they are understandably focused on magnifying their own profits, the deal they arrange might not offer you the best terms. You are well advised to approach banks and credit agencies and see how their loan terms compare with the dealers offers. The deals available become more attractive if you have a positive credit report. For a modest fee, credit reports can be purchased online from major credit bureaus. They indicate your debts and how well you handle them and it is worthwhile bringing a credit report to the negotiations with the dealer.

When deciding which loan to take, remember to look not only at the monthly payments but consider the length of the loan, combined with the APR (Annual Percentage Rate) and the price of the car.  You also need to consider the balance between making a higher down payment for a vehicle with easy financing terms arranged by the dealers, as opposed to less generous financing terms but with a low down payment,

The possibility of making a trade-in with your old car is another common means of helping finance a car purchase. Before entering into such an arrangement, make sure to research the value of your old car to put you in the strongest bargaining position with the dealer.
