The stock market is something you hear about every time you turn on the television news or open a newspaper. However, most people know very little about the stock market and how it operates. You may hear about the falling share prices of one company and the IPO of another but understand only a little of what these things really mean. You may also wonder why stock markets are really necessary and why people want to invest their money in shares.

The stock market is where shares, bonds and securities in companies are traded. To enter the stock market, a company must be publicly owned and offer investors the opportunity to buy shares in it.  A share represents value in a company and its worth will fluctuate depending on the strength of the stock market, investor confidence, the performance of the company and several other economic factors. Every country has its own stock market, however individuals and companies can invest in any stock market they choose.

But how do you make money on the stock exchange? You will hear about people making huge sums of money overnight or losing almost everything. Undoubtedly, the stock market is an exciting place to invest in but comes with a strong element of risk.

Most people make their money through dividends. A dividend is a sum paid on your shares in a company, which is generally awarded to investors on a yearly basis. For example, if you owned 250 shares in a company, you would receive a dividend or a profit on what these shares are worth at the end of the year. As you can imagine, people that own multiple shares in several different companies can make substantial profits.

You can also make money by knowing the best times to sell your shares. Because the factors affecting share prices change from minute to minute, you generally need to know a lot about the stock market in order to pick the right time to sell. The luck involved is what makes the stock market such an exciting place for buyers and sellers.
