Venture Capital

Many companies today are funded by venture capital firms. But what is a venture capital firm and how does it use its resources to invest in new businesses? The following information will outline what a venture capital firm does and how you can use one to fund your own business.

A single venture capital firm often funds several businesses. The way in which it does this is by opening a fund or pool of money to invest in other companies. This money is obtained through fund-raising from other companies, private investors and pension funds. The venture capital firm will have a target in mind, for example, it may aim to raise $200 million for the pool. The fund will have a profile and a purpose that all contributors will agree on beforehand.

Once the pool or fund is complete, it will be invested by the venture capital firm in several other companies. If the fund is interested in investing in technology companies, it will investigate which companies meet its requirements and invest a specific amount in each one.

The intention of the venture capital firm is to invest and make money for its contributors through its investments. The companies it has invested in should undergo positive change in the next five years, for example, the technology firms may go public and join a stock exchange, or may be acquired by other, larger firms. When the conditions are ripe for selling its interests, the venture capital firm will do so. It will then either return the money to the fund for re-investment or pay out its contributors.

If you have a new business and need to help it grow, you can seek the involvement of a venture capital firm. You will need to present a business plan outlining what your intentions for the company are and how much you expect it to grow within a specific timeframe.  If your plan is attractive to the venture capital firm, it will invest in your business. In return, you will give the firm some control over your future decisions as well as stock or interests in your business.
