Collection Services
Do you have people owing you money? If you own a business – no matter how big or small – the chances are that you need to extend credit to your customers in order to keep your business running. Most times, clients will pay their bills on time; however you may need to turn to the services of a collection service if you are having trouble getting the debts recovered.
A collection service is offered by a company or individual who regularly collects debts that are owed to others, on their behalf. That means that if John Smith owes you money, you will use the collection service to contact Mr. Smith and try and recover your money. A collection service can also be in the form of attorneys who regularly collect debts for their clients.
Generally speaking, the collection service will use mail and the telephone to contact your debtors to try and regain the money, depending on the size of the debt. Although it is quite difficult to predict how successful the collection service will be in recovering your debts, you should shop around for the different services in the market to ensure that you are choosing the right one for your business. Ensure that you check how the collection service handles issues such as skip tracing (where the customer disappears without paying the debt) and check out its reputation through references.
Once you’ve chosen a collection agency, make sure that you provide them with all the necessary documentation, including itemized breakdown of contacts that you’ve had with the client.
Remember that debtors are protected by the law and collection services are restricted in what they may or may not do to obtain the money due to you. Obviously, the collection service cannot use force or other shady methods to get the money back to you. There are restrictions placed on these agencies, limiting them to what they can say to the debtor, how and when they can be contacted and so forth. If you aren’t happy with the way a collection service works, you’d be best looking around for another.
