Default Bank computer tapes lost millions at risk

This is not good at all. Identy theft will be on the rise and many could lose so much money. This is very dangerous for the People who bank at Bank of New York Mellon.
Quote:
HARTFORD, Conn. (May 21) - Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal asked the Bank of New York Mellon Wednesday to explain how it lost computer tapes containing the information of more than 4 million customers.
The bank told the state that a box with back-up bank tapes were lost in February from a truck that transports and stores tapes in its storage facility, Blumenthal said. The tapes contained Social Security numbers, names and addresses and possibly bank account numbers and balances, he said.
Lost Bank Tapes May Expose Millions

If I were the people who had money in this bank I would transfer it imediately to another bank and see what else could be done to protect myself against identy theft.

Default Bank computer tapes lost.

Its questionable as to why only one box was lost, or was it taken by an employee.

One would think that there would be a lot more safeguards in effect to prevent this type of loss. With so many peoples accounts at risk, there needs to be a lot more security when it comes to things of this nature.

How do these just become "lost"? What kind of security measures do they use to insure the safety of this information? A lot of people will be at risk now for identity theft and it is ridiculous that this has happened. How many incidents like this have to happen before they step up and do something about it? It really makes me wonder if we are ever really secure anywhere that we do our personal business.

It does seem a little strange that these tapes were just 'lost', doesn't it? Also, I always have to wonder in cases like this, why does it take so long for the public to be made aware of the 'loss'? This happened in February, and a lot of damage can be done in 3 months! I sure hope they find the tapes, and that no one is hurt by the information getting into the wrong hands.

Well when this story ends it will probably be a bank employee or
someone who was doing the transport. I think that the banks have
a real problem keeping our information safe. Security should be priority
number one no matter what. Shame on them for letting this happen.

Default

It definatly makes you wonder who is doing the hiring in these banks and if through back ground checks and security clearance is being done. Things like this should not be happening.

Default bank computers

One would think that a back ground check and maybe even finger prints might just help with these problems i would think but then you might get some one raising cane over the invasion of privacy issue well i say to that is why raise cane over it if you have nothing to hide thats how i feel about that and i think banks every were should have theses policies in effect as of now
