Where to put my money.

I am very afraid to put my money in the bank. With the economy the way it is and all. Our banks are at risk and I have no idea where to put the cash I want to save.
Banks have always been where you put your cash. What else is available. I want it to be there and available at any time. I don't want to have to hide it in my house because someone may find it and steal it. If it isn't in a savings account than it won't draw interest.
What options do we have available. Any ideas folks?
Now I know why my grandfather dealt with cash for everything. It is one way to keep good credit for one and with cash you know that the bills are paid and don't have to worry about fees and stuff like that.
