Default Citizens of Main take action

With the problems with the economy, gas prices going up and down, housing market crisis and more, people often feel as though they are butterflies caught up in a hurricane. Though then comes along a group of Mainers who are launching that seems to be a version of the boston tea party but for the 21st century. These Mainers have come together to make up an organizaton which is called Fed Up With Taxes coalition. This organization is challenging taxes which they believe to be unfairly implemented. This group firmly believes that they have not been given a voice by the goverment, so they are taking steps to ensure that their voice is heard anyway.
In Maine on the ballot come this November, those who vote will be given the opportunity to vote down taxes that were passed by state Legislature to raise funds for its health program.
Advocates who are behind this Peoples Veto say that the citizens were not permitted input when John Baldacci Gov., had signed into law a bill back in April which establishes an excise tax on juice drinks, soft drinks and even flavored water. This also raised the taxes on wine and beer. This also calls for an increase on health insurance claims. Its been said that lawmakers made attempts to sneak these tax hikes into the books. Citizens could have simply sat around and complained to one another about all of this, but instead they decided to take action. They gathered up 95,000 signatures and are challengign the law through a referendum ballot. They have also launched a marketing campaign to get their message out to others. This coalition of Fed Up With Taxes consists of beverage associations, Maines Chamber of Commerce, innkeepers, grocers, states restaurant as well as other groups. Several people drive to New Hampshire to save on their gas, groceries as well as just about everything else, then to add even more taxes onto items, just makes no sense. This according to an economist of Unigersity of Maine says this could cause a loss of sales revenue of about $25 million across the state.
