My husband and I have been doing this for many years. Its a simple thing really.

Keep your reciepts and tax information organized to start with. I keep everything in a file folder.

As soon as our W2s are in I am too the my tax preparer and I have ours direct diposited which also speeds up the process.

Lets start out with the basics. W2's and 1099's are a must. Make sure you have them all before you see your tax office. You are supposed to have them in your hand by January 31st.

Mortgage interest

Property taxes

License plate fees

State income taxes or sales tax

Donations

Employment Expenses

Medical Expenses

Mortgage Insurance Premiums

Local taxes paid

Don't forget your mileage. The government is currently allowing you a deduction of 50.5 cents for every mile you drive for business! Keep track of every mile. Even though it may seem like small potatoes each trip, the trips can add up to a nice business deduction.
