Governor Ritter proposes to increase taxes
With the energy costs rising, many people are being pushed to the very brink of poverty.
Knowing this information Governor Bill Ritter of Colorado proposes a ballot measure which if it is approved will increase the tax on the oil and gas industry of the state. This of course will only force the rise in energy costs even more.
Ritter also has a proposal that would increase the taxes on property in a few of the counties. Admendment 58 would put an end to tax benefits and allow gas and oil companies to subtract costs of the property taxes locally from the severance tax bill of the state. This deduction of tax was put in place some time ago to keep these companies from drilling only in those places where the property taxes are very low. Now if Ritters proposal is some how passed it would allow then force the companies to search for drilling locations to avoid some of the tax overhead. Taxes on commodities of course are always passed on to the people. Raising taxes on gas and oil drilling only means that there will be higher prices for the consumers. If these companies are able to change their locations it means that the area they have been normally operating in will be left in the cold, and the taxes on properties will have to increase there to offset the difference.
Regardless of where you live, we all know that right now is not a good time for increases in taxes. Many people are barely making ends meet now, and what is needed is help from the government, not new taxes or tax increases.
