Legalize Marijuana to Collect Taxes?

Hmmm, here is an interesting one for ya.

California is planning a state vote on whether or not to legalize marijuana so that they can collect taxes on it to help with the budget deficit. Now I am not sure who has proposed this or anything but I guess that they have gotten enough signatures to at least have a vote on it.

If passed it would go like this. Only those who are 21 years of age or older could possess up to one ounce of marijuana. They would not be allowed to smoke or ingest it around anyone below that age and it would not be permitted in public or on school property and so on. Residents could grow their own on their own property in an area 25 sq feet.

Lots of people do not want this legalized. Especially those who sell it now. They feel they would have to compete with corporations.

All I can say is that there must be some real desperation financially for this to be on a ballot in my opinion.

Well,it has been talked about alot all over,really someone who smokes is so much more responsible than someone who drinks.With those regulations I really don't see anything wrong with it.

Over half of the population have smoked pot at least once in their lives says the

October 2002 Time/CNN poll.

This is nuts!!! Give people the right to grow illegal plants and just how are they going to control it?

This is a drug used they way people use it, is this not giving them permission to stay high? I do not want to be on the roads with this mess legal. will be like drunk drivers.

What are they thinking about?

Getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol is much worse than for someone has been smoking pot.

I have seen people do both and the drunk driver is more of a hazard than anyone on the road.

I don't agree that people should be able to grow it in their own yards, as there is no way to actually control how much people are planting and so on.

Though selling it in tobacco stores and such like cigarettes or something like that would be the better way to go. Then the government would be sure to get their tax money out of it.

I dont think that it would matter if it were legalized or not, nothing would actually change.

How do they think that people are actually going to admit to selling it and then pay taxes on it? I just dont think it would happen.

The sellers are in it to make money and thinking that they would admit to all their profits is redundant. In my opinion, nothing would change.

I was just wondering if there had been anymore updates regarding this issue?
I haven't been able to find out anything new, but then again I don't seem to be able to find a lot of time to do much research into it.

If anyone knows anything new about the idea of legalizing Marijuana I would appreciate it if you posted what you know to keep us up to date on it.

Why mot? The government then can get more tax money out of people who do this, always looking for a way to get more of Americans money from them,

Basically what would happen is the government would either grow it themselves or have companies that they regulate do it for them. It would then be sold legally and they would collect taxes on it. There will always be a black market for it though. But there probably would be lots of people who would prefer to purchase it or grow it legally. I imagine they would have some way for a person to grow it legally with documentation such as a person having to obtain a license to grow it or something. That way they get money from the licensing. (Thats just a guess)

I am thinking it would maybe work something like how we obtain a drivers license and the penalties if we get caught driving without a license. I really don't know. I honestly don;t see this happening anytime in the near future but who really knows, anything can happen.

I haven't heard anything more on this but it sure does have me curious as well.

Our country right now is in need of a huge financial boost, and the idea of legalizing marijuana may just be the boost that we are in need of. We all know that there are millions of people using this substance daily and illegally.

So if it were made legal and they could obtain it without worry of getting busted then this would in turn make this country a lot of money on a daily basis practically.

I know that personally I wouldn't care if this became legal or not, it wouldn't make a difference to me one way or another though I do believe that it would bring a lot of revenue to this country and that is something that is dearly needed right now.

It would also probably open up thousands of jobs across the country which is something else that this country is also in dire need of.
