In Florida a new tax could be on its way. This of course is only if the people of Flordia allow it. In November residents of Florida should be prepared to vote on 6 proposed amendments to the states Constitution. Though the most recent one which was added to the ballot in April Amendment 8. This Amendment would allow counties to impose a new sales tax to help the counties raise money for community colleges. Votes in November will not impose this tax but simply give the county the option to do impose the sales tax if commissioners later on decided money needs to be raised for the community colleges. Only then would the sales taxes be put into place. Though before they are put into place, Florida voters would then be asked again to vote on it before it becomes offical.
This sales tax would be a 5 year life plan. Not all residents are opposed to this, but dont expect the new sales tax any time soon. Dr.Jim Kerley President of Gulf Coast Community College says that the college recieves tremedous financial support and look into other avenues prior to the taxing of the residents.
For all of the proposed amendments to go into effect they will have to pass by at least 60%.
I have to admit that I like how this is being left up to the people to decide. I wish we all had more power like this in the way our country is run. Granted we would be voting a whole lot, but I feel that we would have more in a say as to what happens in our country. This is just my opinion of course.
