No new taxes in Salem
Good news comes for those who live in Salem as they will be seeing a tax increase come the new year. On Wednesday supervisors approved unanimously a plan of spending for the upcomming new year that would keep the property tax levy at 6 mills in the new year.
Thanks to the negotiated salt prices this will keep the promise of no new taxes. These salt prices were the key factor in keeping the taxes down in the new year. Supervisor Ron Martz handled the negotiation of the salt prices. Martz has said that the township will be purchasing their salt from the states COSTARS progran for about $52.00 per ton and through Indiana-Westmoreland Council of Goverments for about $56.00 per ton.
Come December 19th the supervisors will once again meet and at this time they will have a final vote on the budget. Back in 2003 the board had approved an increase of taxes which were for one million. This tax increase was then used for fire protection.
When you hear that there will not be a tax increase for an area, you are happy for that area while at the same time wishing or hoping that your area will also have that kind of good news. Right now we all struggle daily to make ends meet while at the same time attempt to live our lives as usual. The thought of more or even increased taxes make that attempt of living a normal live even more difficult.
