Proposed tax levy for Mattoon
The Mattoon School district is now expecting to recieve less revenue from taxes in the new year than it did in this year. This does not include money awarded which is used to make loan payments.
Whats happening is that the school district will no longer forgo is portion of property taxes which are reserved to pay on intrest and bonds. This will be breaking a tradition of the district which has gone back around seven years. Tom Sherman the Assistant Superintendent of Business said at Tuesday's monthly meeting that they will not be looking to abate any tax revenue. The proposed tax levy by Sherman would increase the districts income by around one half of a million dollars, over that of last year. Though would largely leave the school districts tax rate unchanged.
If the board does approve this new levy the individual property tax bills will have a tax rate of $4.59 per $100 of equalized assessed valuation.
Which means that if the tax rate ends up being $4.59 those who own a $60,000 home will be seeing an increase of around thirteen dollars per year on taxes. Though Sherman says that he believes this number will be lower than this.
Bill Standerfer who is a Board Member gives praise to Sherman for this levy, and says that by maintaing good quality all the while keeping taxes under control, Standerfer says hats off to you.
