Default Warning Scham Artist Want to Steal Your Tax Rebate

AUSTIN, Texas (CNN) -- On the heels of the government's plan to stimulate the economy by sending out special tax rebates, authorities say crooks are posing as officials from the Internal Revenue Service or Social Security AdminiWarning SchamAuthorities are warning the public over a tax rebate scham.

They are calling people and asking for personal financial information so they can "directly deposit" rebate money.
One Texas woman, 69-year-old Edna Lawrence, said she was called at least eight times by a man posing as an IRS agent. She didn't fall for it, and instead notified the state's attorney general about the caller.
"Actually, he was kind of pushy. Basically he wasn't going to take 'no,' and I had to hang up on him," she said.

The IRS was warning about such scams. They arent gonna call for information. My bank has a scam warning on their website about phone calls. Most of this stuff is just comman sense stuff. Why would your bank call you to verify your account number. They know when they call you what account number is attached to your name.

Great advice Moneysense thanks for pointing that out. That is so true and so many people fall for that very easily. I think that it is equally important to report such email so that the proper channels can be taken to prevent these things from reoccurring. I know I had a similar email that didn’t have to do with taxes but one that was enticing as well. I got an email stating that I could try out the latest dell lap top computer as a promotion and for survey purposes then keep the lap tap at the end of the survey. Well needless to say I have a dell account, and was interested in purchasing a lap top which was very enticing however my commonsense side of my brain said STOP and check it out so I called Dell and there was no such promotions or surveys going on, upon there request I emailed the email to them and they handled it.

Default Warning Scham Artist Want to Steal Your Tax Rebate

I recently recieved an email. It said that they were the IRS and that after a review that they owed me money to go to a site. I didn't go because I wasn't sure about it. The first worry to me is how did the IRS get my email address and secondly why can't the spell the word form. It was spelled frm. Be wary.

Also, if you have any questions about your tax returns, the IRS can be reached at 1-800-829-1040 for individuals, or at 1-800-829-4933 for businesses. You may have a wait depending on call volume, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Also, you can contact the IRS and check on your filing status at www.irs.gov once again, never click an email link when it comes to your personal information.
