Congratulations to Elinor Ostrom, a professor at Indiana University for being the very first woman to win the Nobel Prize in economics! A round of applaus also should go out to Oliver E. Williamson who is a retired professor at the University of California-Berkeley and who also won a Nobel Prize in economics.
They will share the prize of $1.4 million between the two of them.
They are both experts in how the economy and business's are regulated.

The award was a "great surprise ... I'm still a little bit in shock," Ostrom said by phone at the news conference announcing the prize

She told reporters that she is particularly proud to be the first woman to win the award and she said that she knows she won't be the last. She said that in the mid sixties, when she decided to get her Ph.D., people told her that no major university would even consider giving her a job because she is a woman. She thanks Indiana University for proving that untrue.
I am really happy for her. It goes to show that if you want something bad enough, you can go out and get it!
Hats off to both of them!
