LifeLock Settles Charges

The identity theft protection company LifeLock has settled charges against them claiming that they deceptively made claims about their abilities to protect people from identity theft.

"While LifeLock promised consumers complete protection against all types of identity theft, in truth, the protection it actually provided left enough holes that you could drive a truck through it," said FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz in a statement.

They will pay $11 million to the Federal Trade Commission and $1 million to a group of 35 state attorneys general. This was the biggest largest joint FTC-state settlements on record.

I have seen their commercials on television in the past. They charge $10 a month and claim that they can completely protect you from identity theft. As it turns out many peoples identities were still stolen. I am sure their commercials are not claiming full protection now.

I had also seen those commercials but I didnt feel it was necessary for someone else to do for me what I could do for myself as far as my identity is concerned.

First of all, by going through this company, many people already have access to all of your personal records etc and as we know, just because someone works at a company such as this, doesnt mean they are honest.

Most identity theft is usually from an inside source in cases like this.

There are many things that a person can do to protect their identity. The internet is full of places that will tell you exactly what to do to keep your personal information safe from thieves.

I would rather do this myself than to have a company do it for me.
