Default New Outhouse for Lew

An ailing, retired farmer in Ohio battled the system to keep his old outhouse. He couldn't keep the old one, but got a brand new one, complete with a 1,000 gallon waste tank underneath.

Elbert "Lew" Preston, 79, stood his ground long enough for a nonprofit group to come to his aid and build him a sturdy new outhouse with a waste tank underneath

I don't think I will ever be willing to go this far to keep an old outhouse, lol. At least this man stuck to his guns and got what he wanted, and kept the public happy as well. He sure saves on water though.

Way to go Mr. Preston. Fight for what you want!

This made me a little curious as to how much water a toilet actually uses. Well, here ya go.

Quote:
The largest daily user of water in the home is the toilet. By replacing this one product with a high-efficiency toilet (HET) you can greatly affect your total water usage.
The ABC's of Toilets

The toilet uses 40%, bathing 30%, laundry and dishes 20%, drinks and cooking 5% and other 5%.
This guy might just have the right idea for saving although I don't think I would like to have one either lol.

Believe it or not but I grew up with an out house until the age of 12 when we moved and finally had a inside bath room complete with toliet sink and tub. Before that it was the outhouse and a wash basin and kitchen sink. Those were the good old days.

Thank you for the information, pennypinch. I was aware that the toilet is a major water-user, but didn't realize the percentage was that high.
kst$, I grew up with an outhouse as well, and don't relish going back to one. There's nothing like being 8 years old and going to the outhouse, pulling down one's pants, and then seeing a 6 foot black snake hanging on the door frame!!
I was afraid to go to the outhouse alone again for quite sometime, lol.
