Default Silicon Valley Needs Engineers

Mechanical Engineers are needed to design and run computer data centers. The demand for engineers to keep up with the growth in data centers' need for electricity and their inefficient use of that energy pose environmental, energy and economic challenges. Good mechanical engineers are needed to keep up with the pace.

Mark Graham for The New York Times
Paul Marcoux, vice president for green engineering at Cisco Systems, has worked on the design of about 100 data centers.

In Silicon Valley, the stars have long been charismatic marketing visionaries and cool-nerd software wizards. By contrast, mechanical engineers who design and run computer data centers were traditionally regarded as little more than blue-collar workers in the high-tech world

If you recently graduated from high school, or know someone who is about to embark on their college studies, you may want to mention that these people are in high demand and the salaries (even for a 2 year college graduate) seem to be pretty nice. We all know that the use of computers grows constantly, and people are needed to keep the internet running smoothly. Just a heads up to college students out there, jobs are scarce, but apparently not for engineers.

This would be a fantastic field for young people to get into, and the 6 figure salary is nothing to discount.

Since computers are in such demand and will continue to grow, this would be a job that would keep giving more and more to anyone deciding to get into the career of keeping the computers running and finding ways to save on the electricity etc needed to run them.
