The Humane Society of the United States said in a lawsuit against Petland, that the stores had misled customers by telling them that the puppies they were selling came from top breeders, when in fact, they came from puppy mills.
Many of the puppies sold at the 131 Petland stores were bred and kept in filthy conditions, and none of the puppies had even been socialized. And lack of human contact during puppyhood can be very debilitating when it comes to trying to train the puppies later.
Many of the puppies that were sold were already sick and this cost the new owners vet fees to keep their puppies alive and well.
Petland had this to say to charges,
Quote:

"At Petland, we offer healthy, happy and well-socialized pets to our customers," "As our business requires that our customers be highly satisfied, it only makes sense that we would do everything possible to ensure that we provide healthy puppies."

The plaintiffs want to change the way the puppies are bred and want to be reimbursed for vet charges for vetrinarian care of the sick puppies they bought.
