Economy Hurting New Veterans
We're all having some problems due to the economy. Many of us have lost our home, jobs, credit......the list goes on. New Veterans that have put their lives on the line fighting overseas, should have some consideration, when coming back into their civilian lives. Many of these men and women, however, are also losing jobs and homes.
Wounded veterans are being hit hardest of all. Not only are they injured, but they are unemployed and must wait for disability claims to be processed. This is leading to foreclosure for many of them, according to veterans' organizations.
While there are no hard core foreclosure facts that single out veterans and members of the armed forces, veterans' organizations report a rise in foreclosure for these men and women. The Veterans Affairs Department was recently asked by Congress to look into the effects this economy is having on our veterans, especially to look into the matter of foreclosures.
Service organizations are reporting that there has been a big jump in requests from veterans (especially wounded vets) for assistance in helping them keep their homes and pay their bills.
Recently Congress took some small steps to help the vets, not allowing lenders to foreclose on homes owned by military personnel for nine months after they return from overseas. (This up from 3 months previously). Also lenders must keep interest rates on the veterans' loans stable for a year. A bill signed into law in October prevents certain injured veterans from foreclosure while disability claims are processed, but only for a year.
