Default President Flip Flops on Off-Shore Drilling Issue

President Bush will start the ball rolling on Wednesday to end his longstanding position on offshore oil drilling. The federal ban on offshore drilling of oil was put into place by the first President Bush in 1990, and has been in effect since that time.

President Bush, reversing a longstanding position, will call on Congress on Wednesday to end a federal ban on offshore oil drilling, according to White House officials who say Mr. Bush now wants to work with states to determine where drilling should occur.

I'm not sure how I feel about this issue. We do need more oil at this time to get the gasoline prices down to an affordable price. That would be a definite plus to the offshore oil drilling. I am concerned for the impact though, on the ocean life and do hope that they find a way to better protect it. There have been so many oil spills that have killed way too many of our gorgeous ocean animals and birds, they need to be protected too.

I just read this story about what the president and the nominees want to do about the oil crisis.
President Bush, as you stated, wants to lift the ban and drill oil offshores and in Alaska.
Republican presidential candidate John McCain wants to drill more on the east and west coasts but opposes drilling in Alaska.
Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama wants renewable energy to be funded in the amount of $15 billion a year for 10 years to be paid by auctioning permits to companies that emit greenhouse gases.

I don't presume to know how this should be done, which way is best or if any of them will work. What I do know is that all Americans are being hurt badly by this crisis and something has to be done.
