This is good information to know if you are going to rent a car.
I assumed that my car insurance would cover damages from an
accident if I was driving a rental. This isn't always true.

High gas prices make the free-spirited directive "Road trip!" a costly proposition these days.
And if your summer travel plans include renting a car to spare your vehicle the mileage or to obtain more room for people and bags, there are additional expenses to think about before you get to the rental counter.
A major added expense can be the insurance offered to all drivers. The "collision loss waiver" is one of those small boxes you're asked to initial if you opt out of the coverage offered by the car rental company. This additional insurance coverage can add quite a bit to the daily rental, which is already considerable for a family-sized vehicle, so I usually skip the added coverage.

There are a few tips here that may help you out. I wouldn't want to
have an accident and not have the proper coverage. If I wanted a new
car I would by one. I don't want to aquire one because I didn't cover my
own back side.

I would have both if possible when renting a car i think most car rentals have coverage you can take out when you rent one of their cars or trucks if not you are right about looking into your auto insurance and see if you have rental coverage included in you policy
