Default Winter Is Hard on the Wallet

Boy can old man winter be hard on the wallet! It costs a fortune to live at a reasonably comfortable level through the winter months! Especially a winter like we have been having with all of the snow storms blowing through and dumping the cold stuff on us!

I was wondering how much we have spent on fuel oil and kerosene so far this winter and I estimate it at about $2700.00. That doesn't even include the electric it takes to run the furnace blower either. Nor does that figure in all of the wood that we have burned in the wood stove! I cannot imagine what the cost would be if we didn't have the wood burner!

To top all of that off our furnace blew up two weeks ago. The heat chamber got cracked one really cold night we had when the furance was running almost constantly. We had to buy anew furnace which cost us $1200.00! Thats a grand total of $3900.00 already and it's only February! We still have a ways to go!

You are so right about winter being hard on the wallet. We have already used two tanks of oil and that is all we usually use in the winter time. But, because of the very cold temperatures this winter, we will actually need a third tank or at least a partial tank.

We also have a wood burner which really helps. If not for the wood burner, we would not have been able to get away with the two tanks of oil we have used so far.

We also use a kerosene heater in our garage which is under our house as it is very cold in there and we have been afraid the water pipes would freeze.

So all in all, we have spent more this winter on heating than we ever have in the 25 years we have lived here.

It is and has been the coldest winter here we have had in a longgg time. And boy can you tell it by the electric bills. But we have to have it if we don;t eat..LOL the thing is they know this and charge what they want most of the time.

Though times are really tough with the economy the way it is as well as cold weather. You can do some things like put plastic up on your windows to save some money as well as check weather stripping and gaps around wxterior doors.Replace where needed, believe me it does help on the light bill.

Oil prices are too high noone can afford it, its the reason I moved from my house, the prices of everything is up so high noone can afford any extrias, people can barely afford the things they need.
