Default Wives Out-Earning Their Husbands

Wow, this one suprised me. I was doing my daily reading on CnnMoney and saw an article titles something like "Wives Earn More than Husbands." Here was the jist of the article.

A survey that was just released yesterday found that 22% of men made less than their wives in 2007. The people who were polled were U.S. born 30-44 year olds.

Back in 1970, only 4% of men earned less than their wives. It was found that men had higher educations than women. In 2007, most of the couples polled had about the same amount of education.

Quote:
"For a long time, men didn't need education to make a decent wage -- they could go into manufacturing or other labor," said Jenny Wittner, associate director of the advocacy group Women Employed.
"Women had to get an education to keep up, and over the years that has started to translate into a difference in wages," Wittner added.
I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that couples can no longer make it with one bread winner. It takes both in the relationship earning money. So now women are more inclined to work right out of highschool or college these days.

There are alot more women who attend college than there are men. Most men seem to attend a trade school, or simply graduate high school and begin working. Where as with there being more women attending college, they are of course going to have the knowledge and maybe even some experience in a certain field which would allow them to earn more money than a man would just out of high school.

This is why its important for both men and women to attend college to gain the knowledege for each of them to gain a better position and of course a better pay.
