Dental Insurance

While most people have some form of healthcare insurance plan, the demand for affordable dental insurance has increased considerably in recent years.

Most medical insurance plans are designed to treat emergency and illness but do not always extend to dental care. Dental care insurance plans encourage preventative care by providing high quality service and are usually top up or complementary plans that are a part of existing healthcare plans.

The average individual and family can select from a wide variety of dental plans that cater for their personal situations. Some plans allow you the freedom to choose your own dentist (open panel plans), while others require you to select a dentist from a preferred list of suppliers (closed panel plans.) Other plans such as Preferred Provider Organization plans (PPO) allow you to access dental care from a preferred network and receive a higher reimbursement than if you go outside the network for services.

There are several factors to consider when you are looking to purchase a dental insurance plan. Many people will find their immediate attention is drawn to the out of pocket costs associated with the plan, but your main focus should be on whether it will meet your ongoing dental needs.

Some common questions you should ask yourself are:

  • Are you able to select your own dentist or are you obliged to use dentists belonging to the insurance company's network?
  • Who decides what type of treatment plan you are offered on your regular visits – the insurance company, the dentist, or you?
  • Does your plan fully cater for all diagnostic, preventive and emergency services?
  • What types of costs will you have to meet yourself?
  • Is orthodontic treatment and surgery for dental disease covered by your plan?
  • Does your plan allow you to visit a specialist when you wish or do you need to seek a referral from your dentist beforehand?

Most worthwhile dental insurance plans cover between 70 to 80 percent of dental costs, therefore you should be prepared to meet the remainder of the costs yourself. You should also ensure that you shop around to find the dental plan that best fits your needs.
