Roth IRA Investment Plans
There exist a number of different forms of retirement investment plans in the United States. The most common of these is the Individual Retirement Account, or IRA. These schemes provide contributors with a way to invest funds that will ultimately provide a lump sum benefit or monthly income upon the contributor’s retirement. Another form of retirement fund is called the 401(k).
A special form of IRA, named after its creator Delaware senator William V. Roth, is called the Roth IRA. This plan offers contributors a vehicle to save their retirement funds while providing a number of special tax advantages. The Roth IRA accepts contributions from earned income, meaning funds that have already been taxed by the government. A Roth IRA will then invest those funds in a range of financial instruments such as managed or mutual funds as well as the international bond and stock markets. Some schemes also invest their funds in more rewarding (and potentially risky) investment vehicles such as derivatives and real estate.
As Roth IRA’s use earned income contributions, they are not tax deductible. However, the actual income that they may accrue is free of federal income tax. While the amounts that each individual can invest are limited, there are a number of advantages in investing in Roth IRA’s as opposed to traditional IRA’s. These include there being less restrictions on the amount and timing of withdrawals of initial and income investments. Also, capital gains, dividends and interest are not liable to taxation. One further advantage is that with a man and woman being joint Roth IRA contributors, the death of one partner need not lead to a loss of rights for the other member of the partnership. Roth IRA’s may be transferred to a spouse upon the death of a husband or wife. Withdrawals can also be made at any time, in contrast to the age restrictions attached to the regular IRA schemes.
Roth IRA’s offer a range of advantages over the traditional IRA, and any person saving for their retirement should investigate these attractive financial vehicles.
