Credit Reports

Credit reports are published as an indication of an individual’s or company’s past history of borrowing and repaying debt.  This information will also include any statistics associated with poor payment histories and bankruptcies.  A person’s credit report is also termed their credit history.

Creditworthiness is a check made by a financial organisation when it is approached to lend funds to any particular person or company.  The lending authority will want to lend the maximum amount possible, in an effort to obtain the greatest return in interest payments.  At the same time, it will want to keep its risk exposure to a minimum.  In order to make a measured judgment about the viability of any new loan arrangement, it utilizes the credit report mechanism.

A person’s credit report is calculated based on a number of factors.  Primary among these is that person’s payment history on previous debts.  These could be small bank loans for sundry requirements, auto loans and home equity loans.  Next, the lending agency will want to see how well and consistently the borrower has repaid their loans in the past.  They will require income information, lifestyle stability information such as the length of time the person has lived in the one abode and other measures of creditworthiness such as credit card usage history.  Credit agencies will also look at the credit lines available to you, and the amount of credit that you have utilised over time.

Credit agencies exist in all major industrial companies, and citizens of those states are entitled to receive one annual report indicating their level of credit worth.  In the United States, the agencies that produce these reports are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.  Be aware, however, that a good credit history in one country need not mean automatic acceptance for credit in another.  Credit reports are country specific.  This has caused hardship for the many immigrants to industrialized countries who must essentially start their credit histories over again from scratch.  This situation will need to be addressed in the years to come as greater international mobility leads the way for large migrations of people around the globe.
