Philanthropy and Donations
If you've ever raised money for your local school or hospital, or if you've been part of an event designed to benefit a charitable organization, you've participated in philanthropy. Philanthropy, which is the act of giving without taking a profit for oneself, is the way in which charities and non-profit organizations survive. The practise of giving donations to causes that you believe in ensures the continuation of the charity and enables them to pursue the aims of their causes.
Today, thousands of charities exist representing a diverse range of causes. Some charities such as Save the Children and Amnesty International operate on a global level, drawing attention to their causes around the world. Other charities may focus on local issues and rely on local people for the bulk of their funding and support.
You may be under the illusion that most non-profit organizations rely on business donations and on the generosity of wealthy philanthropists for the bulk of their funds. Therefore it may surprise you to learn that over 76 percent of funds collected by charitable organizations in the U.S in 2002 came from small individual donations. The average American household donated two percent of its annual income to charitable causes last year but more is needed due to increased costs of living and decreased government support for many communities.
If you want to get more involved with your community and to find new ways to donate time or money to those less fortunate than yourself, the following articles will help you do so. You will learn how you can make regular tax deductible donations to needy organizations. If you are unable to assist a charity financially, you may like to become more involved with their day to day work as a volunteer. Or you may wish to plan ways of your own to support a cause that you are passionate about. Regardless of the type of support you can give, the following information should at least provide you with food for thought and a new understanding of how charities operate.
