Other Causes

If you don't regularly support a local charity or non-profit organization by making financial contributions, there are still many valuable ways in which you can help them achieve their aims. Perhaps you like the idea of helping raise money for a national campaign or donating a few hours of your time each week in a local office? The following article explores ways in which you can assist non-profit organizations if you are unable to do so financially or if you want to become more involved in the type of work they do.

One of the most valuable ways you can assist a charity is as a volunteer. Most organizations are always in need of volunteers and fund-raisers. In fact, some need volunteers just as much as they need financial donations. As well as having the opportunity to make a difference and experience direct involvement in a cause that is meaningful to you, you will also gain a few perks being a volunteer. Most of your costs should be tax-deductible including transport and small out of pocket expenses.

The creation of volunteer opportunities is becoming more and more important to the average charity. In a major survey published in 1998 by the UPS Foundation, 40 percent of respondents who no longer volunteered with their local charity reported that their time was managed inappropriately. This feedback has presented charitable organizations with a challenge to make the best use of volunteers as possible.

Other ways in which you can help is to do volunteer work from home. Many organizations need help managing databases, sending out emails and invitations and following up on donor contributions. Just a few hours of your time each week from home or from your charity's local office can make all the difference.

Another way you can experience philanthropy at its best is to do some fund-raising of your own. Don't be afraid to organize a raffle or use your performance in your next marathon to raise money for a worthy cause. No matter how small your contribution, it will be appreciated.
