Liability Insurance

Liability insurance essentially arose out of groups of individuals who may have been part of the same business or professional organization forming a method of self protection in the event of damage by one of its members.  Each member of the organization would pay a small sum of money each year, or premium, into a common fund that would be used to compensate individual members of the self-protection scheme.

Generally speaking, the money is not normally received by the insured party, but it is used to compensate those individuals or organizations damaged by the action of the insured person.  One of the most prominent groups of professionals covered by such liability insurance are doctors, who are obliged to purchase such insurance cover in the event that their actions result in the injury or death of one of their patients.  Similar insurance cover is purchased by many other professionals such as lawyers, engineers, architects, accountants and so on, whose professional activities with the general public might result in personal harm or property damage.

Nowadays, it would seem that liability insurance has become even more widespread with school teachers, public servants, postmen and all sorts of workers seeking to ensure that their actions during the course of their working day do not result in personal lawsuits that could result in their own personal financial ruin.

When a claim is made by a third party, the insured will normally apply to their governing group with whom the liability insurance is maintained, and a defence against the claim may be made.  This process can be lengthy, and with all such activities the costly intervention of lawyers is inevitable.

In whatever business a person is engaged today, they would be well advised either to arrange for their own personal liability insurance, or, if their employer maintains such a policy, they should become conversant with the associated insurance policy terms.  Personal liability lawsuits have become big business, and going without personal liability insurance is quite simply asking for trouble.
