Property Damage Insurance

Setting up a new business is no cakewalk.  You will probably have spent many months, if not years setting your business up, writing business plans, assembling stock and office equipment.  You will have designed your working area with furnishings and décor to suit the business atmosphere you are seeking to project.  And then comes the big day when your business is launched.  Champagne may flow, and local VIPs may be invited to give your business the launch it deserves.  And then you’re up and running…

All the focus to date has been positive.  How to make money.  How to generate business.  How to build new contacts and clients.  Everything has a positive bent and all of the focus is on growth and development.  But then a shock! You’re called up in the middle of the night by the water company to be told that the floor above your office has burst a water pipe and their flood is now raining down on all of your office equipment and stock, so lovingly gathered and displayed over the previous months.  Then you feel the stab in your heart…  You never did get back to that insurance agent who’s been pestering you about property damage insurance ever since you set up shop.  Why!?  But, in true Murphy’s Law fashion, if something can go wrong, it will, and at the worst possible moment.

But you may have been lucky.  Perhaps you got away with a few ruined PC’s or water damage to a few boxes of goods that were due to be shipped the following day to a new client in the next town.  The bulk of your stock was due to arrive the following day.  You breathe a sigh of relief.  Time to rest on your laurels?  Not at all!  Pick up the telephone and call that insurance agent right away.

What would have happened if the building had caught fire?  What about the scenario where you had lost ALL of your stock when the hot water boiler blew up, bringing down the ceiling and most of the office on the floor above?  And then there’s theft?  We live in times where nothing is impervious to the determined burglar.  Cleaning out an office of all of its computer equipment, or a storeroom of all of its stock takes minutes.  Without property damage insurance a small business could be ruined.  Many of us see insurance as an evil, albeit an unnecessary one, but just try and imagine the feeling when you get that call in the middle of the night from the police, or fire brigade.  Was it worth it saving a few dollars, thinking it would never happen to you…?
