Cashier's Check
A common way many people exchange money is via a cashier's check. Alternatively known as a bank check, a cashier's check is a check drawn up and given to an individual or a company for a fee. When you use a cashier's check, you are indicating that the check is guaranteed by your bank. Because they are guaranteed, most other financial institutions will clear cashier's checks instantly as they do cash.
Cashier's checks can be used to purchase a wide range of goods and services. For example, if you are purchasing a new home, you usually need to provide some form of down payment. Often the individual or the real estate involved with selling you the home will request that you provide your down payment in the form of a cashier's check.
A cashier's check is easily recognizable. The name of the bank issuing the check will be easily visible along with its logo. This is usually found in one of the upper corners of the check. The check will also come with a security device, such as a complicated pattern or watermark. This deters people from making fraudulent copies. The words “cashier's check” must also be visible along with the name of the payee and the amount in words and numbers.
The type of signature required to authorize a cashier's check depends on the bank. Sometimes the check will feature a computerized signature of a senior member of the bank, or it will need to be signed in person by a bank employee. Often two signatures are needed, which is worth bearing in mind when you visit a bank hoping to obtain a cashier's check quickly.
Producing a cashier's check for payment gives you several advantages. It offers peace of mind to the person or company that you are making the purchase from, because they know that the bank is responsible for the funds. It is also more secure than a personal check and less likely to be tampered with or used for counterfeit purposes.
