Global ATM Networks

One of the easiest options for overseas travelers to bring along funds for their vacation expenses is through Global ATM Network machines. This is by far the cheapest and safest way to ensure that you are able to instantly access your bank account and withdraw local currency. Nothing quite beats the convenience of carrying a piece of plastic in your wallet, finding the nearest ATM machine (found in practically every major region) and getting your cash ‘from the wall’.

Besides the convenience of Global ATM Networks is also the fact that the commission rate is considered one of the best for this type of service, with banks charging anything between 0 and 2% on average.  While relying on ATM machines seems like a fantastic idea, travelers should bear in mind that not all regions have these kind of machines, especially outback and rural areas. Also, some ATM machines might not be compatible with other networks aboard. It is good to check with your financial institution before relying on the ATM machine in your country of destination, whether your card will be able to draw money. As a rule of thumb, most major cards such as Cirrus, Visa, PLUS, Mastercard and Eurocard are acceptable all over the world. Most financial institutions will have online services for cardholders to check where they can find the nearest ATM machine across the globe.

Of course, there are some disadvantages to relying on ATM network machines. Firstly, many banks are now introducing conversion fees over and beyond the flat rates that they charge. Check to see whether there are any hidden fees before deciding on a card. Also, don’t depend solely on an ATM card and always remember to take some form of back up in case your pin number is not compatible or the ATM machine is simply on the blink!
