Traveler’s Checks
When traveling abroad, one of the most acceptable forms of carrying funds is via traveler’s checks. These are very easy to purchase from your home bank, allow you carry vast amounts of money, are acceptable at most destinations around the world, and can be converted back into your own currency once your holiday is over and you have some money over. Traveler’s checks are perfect for those situations where you do not have an access to ATM machines in rural areas, and are an excellent back up for when the ATM machine simply does not work.
It is important to shop around before purchasing traveler’s checks as commission rates can vary from bank to bank. Once you reach your destination, it is also important to do some shopping around to see where you can cash your checks. Some establishments charge up to a 2% processing fee and so it is advisable to find a reasonable – and reputable! – exchange bureau to cash your checks.
Traveler’s checks are often touted as the safest form of funding for abroad, but the truth is that travelers need to take certain precautions in order to ensure that their checks will be refunded if lost or stolen. Many travelers don’t know that if they cannot provide the transaction record, the issuer is not obligated to provide a refund. For this reason, it is extremely important for travelers to keep their receipt, as well as copies of the traveler’s checks (to be kept separate from the originals), just in case they lose them.
Finally, when buying traveler’s checks, remember to buy large and small denominations as you will find yourself in positions when some exchange bureaus or shop keepers will prefer larger denominations, while others prefer smaller ones.
